1 Year Sober

By | General | No Comments

“Why don’t you just do it for January like everyone else?” “You’ll miss out on so many fun nights!” “Good luck with that, I wouldn’t want to do it” “You are going to be so bored.” These are a few of the comments I have had to my decision to give up alcohol for a whole year Dry January only? I’ve done that before, it’s not a challenge and won’t bring the freedom from consumption I’m looking for. Missing out on fun nights? I want to reject the idea that my enjoyment is dependent on the consumption of alcohol: I’ve…

My fear of public speaking

By | Business | No Comments

For as long as I can remember I have actively avoided public speaking: even being involved in a seminar/lecture used to intimidate me. Whilst in school I was loud (and probably obnoxious) in the class room when sat in my seat. But ask me to stand up and talk to the class and I’d freeze up. These first few nervous forays into the realm of being ‘centre of attention’ made me uncomfortable, and so when group work came about I’d ensure I was not the member of my team that found themselves in the spotlight with all eyes on them….

Entrepreneurial resources

Being a cash strapped start up is one thing, but understanding how to start and run a business is a whole different story! I had only been back from travelling the world for a few months and was sat down at my dining room table applying for Banking and Finance graduate schemes and jobs. Momentarily my perspective changed, and I had a birds eye perspective of what I was up to: I was applying for jobs I didn’t have any passion for, in a city I felt obliged to move to due to my degree (BSc Economics).i didn’t want this!…

Freelancers

Starting a business with just £200 is a challenge: especially when up against behemoths the size of Mopp (who were acquired by Handy and traditional companies that have longevity like Molly Maids and Daily Poppins. Being so cash strapped, you have to spend extremely wisely, and in the modern era, with access to a world of resources, that means looking abroad! There are a variety of websites whereby you can find highly skilled freelancers to perform tasks for you. The most frugal of these sites is Fiverr : on this site there are THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS of people who will do a…

Maintaining motivation

By | Business, General | No Comments

So I’d got a first in first year. After feeling the personal satisfaction of doing well, I decided that my challenge would be to graduate with a first. Throughout second and third year I made up one part of a tightly knit group of students who wanted to do well. We found ourselves teaching each other by re-enacting lectures: we would sneak into the theatres, and one of us would present economic arguments to the others. Afterwards we would review it and build upon it, compiling comprehensive answers that catered for any eventuality that our examiners may throw at us….

Finding motivation

By | Business, General | No Comments

I turned up to university, looked around, and saw that there was no one encouraging (forcing) me to work when back in school. Previously when people said “do your work”, I’d rebel against them by not doing my work: if only they’d known that this was how I worked they could’ve used Jedi mind tricks on me to get stuff done. This time, if I wanted something, it would be myself and myself  alone that had to earn it. Couple that with the grade boundary going up once more, meaning that m peers were 3 grades ‘better’ than me, and…

I’d like to tell you about how I started my first business: Gleem But in order to do that, I think it would be good to tell you about the beginning. I wasn’t the best student back in school. I went to Bristol Grammar School: one of the best private schools in Bristol (and something that must’ve cost my parents an arm and a leg). I didn’t like working at school: I was always messing about and as soon as the school day finished, I had no intention of doing homework: I’d worked far too hard during the day… So school…

Haus Bar

By | General | No Comments

Have you even been to Haus Bar?  Before tonight I haven’t, but I have visited the other ‘speak easy’ bates of bristol… We walked up balckboy hill: potentially a little too far from the glitz and glamour…but below a sport shop.  However: When we walked up to the door it was necessary that i, the man in shirt and shoes stood at the front to make the obligatory good impression . We entered into relatively empty bar that had some very ‘chill’ music (according to Milos): I wouldn’t know (I rarely listen to Muzak). Upon sitting down queue a very…

Burger #7: Burger Joint 82/100

By | General | No Comments

A crowd pleaser: Burger Joint is quickly becoming a Bristol burger institution: the ability to build WHATEVER burger you want! With 10 or so choices of meat, 3 choices of bread (or bread less), 30+ toppings and 20+ sauces and lots of side dishes, it’s hard to dislike: mainly because you can build your meal to suit your current cravings! Now there’s one mistake I have NEVER been able to remember that a good burger needs to ‘gel’ together…the combination of everything needs to glue itself together into a gluttonous mount of deliciousness…  My previous visits have comprised of blue…

To burger or not to burger

By | General | No Comments

So I haven’t written a post in a while, and that’s not good! I found myself putting this blog low down in my priority list: I’m very busy with Gleem, and after reading bristolburgers.wordpress.com, and finding myself envious of how well he can write so descriptively, I felt disheartened, So I didn’t end up writing a post for a few weeks.  I did some mental clarifying, and this blog, like I’ve said from the beginning is currently for me! I want to get better at writing, so I’m going to make sure I follow through on this! The blog is…
